Metro Tasmania abides by the Right to Information Act 2009.


What is the Right to Information?

The Right to Information Act 2009 allows for greater access to information held by government bodies by:

  • Authorising and encouraging greater routine disclosure of information without the need for requests and applications;
  • Authorising and encouraging greater active disclosure of information in response to informal requests, without the need for applications;
  • Giving members of the public an enforceable right to information; and
  • Proving access to information is restricted in only limited circumstances which are defined in the Act.

How do I get access to information?

Metro Tasmania Pty Ltd (Metro) is required by the Act to make information available to the public through proactive disclosure. This means we are to routinely make information available in order to assist the public understand what we do and how we do it. This may be done via this website and through published documents.

You may find information from Metro in one of the following ways:

  • On this website;
  • In our annual reports.

If you cannot find the information you are looking for using one of the methods above, contact Metro by:

We may be able to assist you in finding the information or give it to you directly. If the information is not freely available we will assist you to complete an application for assessed disclosure.


Applications for assessed disclosure

An application for assessed disclosure is required when the information you are looking for is not freely available. It is not required to use the form provided but please note that as a requirement of Regulation 4 of the Right to Information Regulations 2010, any requests for information which do not use the form must be in writing and include all the information which is requested in the form.

If we do not believe that Metro is best placed to provide you with the information you are seeking we may transfer your application to another public authority.

Once we have completed these steps an officer will assess your request against the Right to Information Act 2009 and let you know of the outcome of the process in writing.

You will be notified of the decision on your application as soon as possible, but no later than 20 working days of the application being accepted.

  • What if my request is complex? If your request is complex or for a large amount of information we may request that you allow us more time.
  • What if Metro needs to consult with a third party to complete my request? If we need to consult with a third party about their business affairs or personal information to complete your request then we are automatically given more time to deal with the time-consuming nature of this communication. We will notify you if this is the case, and still aim to complete your case as soon as is practicable, but not longer than 40 working days from the date of acceptance of your application.
  • What if my application is refused? In the event of all or part of your application being refused, the reasons for refusal must be provided as part of the decision communicated to you, together with details on the right to seek a review of the decision.
  • What if Metro does not get back to me in the permitted timeframe? If the officer assessing your request does not get back to you within the allowed timeframe then it is to be assumed that Metro has refused your request, and you are entitled to make an application for review to the Ombudsman if you choose.
