Hobart and Launceston
Hobart and Launceston
Metro services in Hobart and Launceston use the Metrofare ticketing system.
Using the Metrofare Ticketing System
Electronic ticket machines are installed in all Metro buses. This consists of a driver's console from which single trip and daily off-peak tickets are sold and a ticket validator which is used by passengers to validate their tickets. Metro Ten, Ten Day and concession/student montlhly tickets can be pre-purchased from Metro ticket sales agents. These tickets must also be validated by the passenger on each boarding.
How Does It Work?
When you buy a single trip or Day Tripper off-peak ticket on the bus the driver will issue you a blank ticket which you then insert into the validator. The validator prints details of your purchase on the ticket and records the sale. If you choose to take advantage of Metro's range of discounted Metro Ten, Ten Day and concession/student monthly tickets, purchased from a Metro sales agent, you are issued with a pre-printed ticket, which must be validated each time you board the bus. The validator will print details of your trip on the ticket.
Free Transfers
If you are using a Ten trip ticket and you need to transfer between buses to complete your journey, the validator will accept your ticket without deducting another trip if you board the second bus within 90 minutes of validating your ticket on the first bus. The validator will accept any number of trips on Tripper tickets in the off-peak times or at any time for Seniors' All-Day tickets.
Validate Your Ticket
All tickets including those purchased from Metro sales agents must be validated as you board the bus. Place your ticket into the validator - follow the arrows on the ticket to make sure it is the right way up and inserted in the right direction. The validator will return your ticket with the travel details printed on it and from this you can see how many trips you have left on a Metro Ten or how many days are left on a Ten Day ticket. If you have a problem just check with the driver. Remember, if you are travelling on a concession ticket, you are required to carry your concession permit and show it to the driver on request.
Looking after your Ticket
Details of the ticket you purchased and the number of trips taken are encoded on the magnetic strip on the back of the ticket. To keep your ticket safe from damage ask for a ticket wallet from a Metro Sales Agent when you buy your ticket.
