Understanding Metro's Ticket Sections

Section Map showing where sectional breaks occur for Hobart

Metrofare tickets for adults work on a sectional basis, the further you travel the more you pay. Section numbers are indicated on all bus stops. Sections count outwards from the City centre, which is section No. 1.

There are three tickets for journeys of different lengths - Short (1-4 sections), Medium (5-10 sections) and Long (11 or more sections). All tickets allow for free transfers between buses for up to 90 minutes from the time of first boarding, within the sectional range of the ticket, the end of the 90 minute period is shown on the ticket.

Two types of sectional tickets are available.

  • Single use tickets which you buy from the driver, or
  • Metro 10 tickets which provide ten trips on any day, at a 20% discount, and are purchased from an agent.

Travel from Section 1 to Section 5 requires a Medium (5-10 section) ticket. If sufficient sections are purchased a passenger can make a quick return trip or travel across town.

Some Examples:
A return trip
A passenger travelling from Moonah (Section 3) to Hobart (Section 1) may purchase a Medium (5-10 section) ticket, travel to Hobart then board a return bus to Moonah (bus transfers must take place within 90 minutes of the tickets first validation) and use the same ticket to perform this function. A total of 6 sections will be travelled and a cost saving made compared to the cost of two Short (1-4 section) tickets for the same journey.

A cross-town trip
For a person who wishes to travel from Tranmere (Section 8) to the University of Tasmania (Section 2), on the other side of Town. This involves 10 sections and may be completed on a Medium (5-10 section) ticket, even though a bus transfer is required in Hobart. The bus transfer must be completed within 90 minutes of the first boarding/validation of your ticket. The second leg of the journey may then continue from Hobart onto the University using the same ticket.

Off peak Day Rover and Day Tripper tickets permit unlimited travel on a given day after 9:00am weekdays, or all day on weekends and public holidays.

If you want an all-day ticket for travel starting before 9:00am on weekdays then the All-Day Tripper and All-Day Rover are available for purchase on the bus.
