      Concessions Available   
 

Metro offers three basic categories of concessional fares:

  • Concession Fares – available to Adult Concession passengers, Seniors and full-time University of Tasmania or full-time TAFE students.
  • Child/Student fares – available for full time primary and secondary school students or children less than 16 years of age.
  • Special Travel Concessions – a range of passengers who are entitled to free travel.

CONCESSION FARES

Passengers eligible for Concession fares have access to the following tickets:

  • Single journey tickets which permit travel for an unlimited distance provided that if the passenger transfers to another bus, they do so within 90 minutes of commencing the journey (60 minutes in Burnie).
  • Off-peak day travel tickets (Day Tripper or Metro-10 Day Tripper). These tickets permit all day travel for the rest of the day after 9:00am (Monday to Friday) or all day Saturdays, Sundays or Public Holidays.
  • All day travel Monday to Friday using the All-Day Tripper (available only as a single ticket on the bus).
  • Concession monthly

Passengers need to carry proof of their entitlement with them and show the driver on request if they wish to travel at the Concession fare.

Only Adult Concessions Card Holders are eligible to purchase CONCESSION fares.

The following passengers are Adult Concession passengers:

  • Holders of Health Care Cards;
  • Holders of Health Benefit Cards;
  • Holders of Centrelink or Veterans Affairs Pensioner Cards;
  • Persons aged 70 or over;
  • Persons who are classified as War Widows by Veterans Affairs; and
  • Holders of Adult Concession Bus Tokens issued by a recognised employment agency or authorised supplier.

Tertiary Students are eligible for CONCESSION fares.

Full-time University of Tasmania or TAFE Tasmania students are eligible to purchase Concession fares.

Seniors are eligible for CONCESSION fares.

Tasmanian Seniors Card holders are eligible to purchase Concession fares.

STUDENT/CHILD FARES

Children under 16 years of age are eligible to travel at the "Student/Child" fares. Secondary Students 16 years or over who are travelling to and from school, between 6:30 am and 6:00pm, are also able to travel at the Student/Child fare.

Student/Child passengers can travel unlimited distances and for up to ninety minutes on a single journey ticket.
All day travel (after 9:00 am) is available for Child passengers using the popular Day-Tripper ticket.
Student/Child passengers are also able to use the All Day Tripper for all-day travel commencing before 9:00am.
Student/Child passengers can also purchase unlimited travel for one calendar month.

SPECIAL CONCESSIONS

Free Student Travel Passes

Students with a "free student travel pass" issued by the Department of Infrastructure, Energy & Resources can travel to and from school between 6:30 am and 6:00pm for free. Travel outside these hours, or for other purposes requires the payment of a student/child fare. Any questions regarding this service should be directed to the Department of Infrastructure, Energy and Resources.

Other Special Concessions

The following passengers are entitled to free travel:

  • Children less than 5 years accompanied by a responsible person.
  • Tasmanian Police Officers in uniform;
  • St Johns Ambulance volunteers in uniform;
  • Blind persons plus attendant (must present a valid travel pass);
  • World War One veterans and spouses; and
  • TPI & EDA pensioners (must present a valid travel pass).
  • A Companion Card holder (must present a valid card) may take their travel companion for free on Metro services

STUDENT CONCESSION TRAVEL PASS (Free Travel):

The Concessions and Subsidies section of  "Department of Infrastructure, Energy and Resources" issue to full-time Infant, Primary, Secondary and Matric students, who are named on a Pension or Health Care Card, or whose parents are Low Income Earners.
 

 
 

STUDENT CONCESSION FARE PERMIT:

Full-time Infant, Primary, Secondary and College Students can obtain Student Concession, Off-Peak Day Tripper (after 9:00am Monday to Friday) and All-Day Tripper tickets from the driver. Multi-Trip tickets are available from Metro Ticket Agents. Permits are printed by Metro and sent to the relevant School Principals for issue

 

UNIVERSITY OF TASMANIA IDENTIFICATION CARD:

Full-time University of Tasmania students are eligible to purchase Adult Concession, Off-Peak Day Tripper (after 9:00am Monday to Friday) and All-Day Tripper tickets from the driver. Multi-Trip tickets are available from Metro Ticket Agents. These cards are issued by the University of Tasmania to full-time students. (Part-time University of Tasmania students are eligible to purchase Adult fares only) 

TAFE TASMANIA IDENTIFICATION CARD:

Full-time TAFE Tasmania students are eligible to purchase Adult Concession, Off-Peak Day Tripper (after 9:00am Monday to Friday) and All-Day Tripper tickets from the driver. Multi-Trip tickets are available from Metro Ticket Agents. These cards are issued by the TAFE Tasmania to full-time students. (Part-time TAFE Tasmania students are eligible to purchase Adult fares only)

 

   
  General Concession Cards
 

INCAPACITATED EX-MEMBER OF THE FORCES FREE TRAVEL PASS:

Holders of a Veterans Affairs Gold Card endorsed "TPI" or "EDA" are entitled to free travel on Metro buses.

Free Travel Permits and Passes are only available from Metro administration offices in Hobart, Launceston and Burnie, or the Metro Shop located inside Hobart's GPO, 9 Elizabeth St.


 

BLIND PERSONS FREE TRAVEL PASS:

Persons who are deemed to be legally blind and includes their assistant and guide dog, may travel free on Metro buses. Travel Passes are issued by Metro and recognized statewide.

WAR WIDOW CONCESSION FARE PERMIT:

A person whose spouse's death is officially accepted by Veterans Affairs as a result of War Service. Holders of this Permit are eligible to purchase Adult Concession, Off-Peak Day Tripper (after 9:00am Monday to Friday) and All-Day Tripper tickets from the driver. Multi-trip tickets are available from Metro Ticket Agents. Permits available from the Metro Shop or Metro Administration Centres: Springfield, Launceston and Burnie.

 

PENSIONER CONCESSION CARD:

These cards are issued by Centrelink to all Pensioners, Mature Age Allowance recipients, people over 60 who receive Job Search, New Start, Sickness and people receiving Special benefits for more than 12 months. Holders of this card are eligible to purchase Adult Concession, Off-Peak Day Tripper (after 9:00am Monday to Friday) and All-Day Tripper tickets from the driver. Multi-trip tickets are available from Metro Ticket Agents.

 

SENIORS CARD:                                                                            

The Seniors Card Office issue cards free of charge to people over 60 years of age, who are not in paid employment for more than 20 hours per week. There is no income or pension limit. Holders of this card are eligible to purchase Adult Concession, Off-Peak Day Tripper (after 9:00am Monday to Friday) and All-Day Tripper tickets from the driver. Multi-trip tickets are available from Metro Ticket Agents.

 

  

HEALTH CARE OR HEALTH BENEFITS CARD:                             

These cards are issued by the Centrelink to recipients of Job Search, New Start, Sickness and special Benefits, Sole Parents and Low Income Earners. Holders of this card are eligible to purchase Adult Concession, Off-Peak Day Tripper (after 9:00am Monday to Friday) and All-Day Tripper tickets from the driver. Multi-trip tickets are available from Metro Ticket Agents.

 

METRO ADULT CONCESSION BUS TOKEN:

Metro and Centrelink Officers supply bus tokens to people who are going to employment interviews or who are in need of assistance. An adult single trip concession is issued.

 


 
TASMANIAN POLICE OFFICERS:     

Police Officers are entitled to travel free of charge on Metro services, on production of their Police Officers Badge. No ticket is issued.

 

ST JOHN AMBULANCE OFFICERS: 

St. John Ambulance Officers are entitled to travel free of charge on Metro services, ONLY when dressed in their official St. Johns Uniform. No ticket is issued.

 

COMPANION CARD:

You must show your Companion Card when boarding the bus for each trip, the bus driver will permit your companion to travel at no cost (free). A ticket will not be issued to the companion passenger. The Companion Card holder will need to purchase or have a bus ticket to use when boarding the bus., free travel is for their companion only.

Only the person whose photograph and details appear on the Companion Card can use the card.
