       Metro's Ticketing Systems

Metro has run electronic ticketing systems since 1988, the first of these was purchased from
Ascom Montel, France and installed in the Hobart and Launceston Depots.
Since then Wayfarer has been installed in Burnie and recently with the purchase of
Hobart Coaches and the Bothwell Service, Metro now additionally runs the AES Ticketing
System.

How Sections work

 Using the Metrofare Ticketing System

Electronic ticket machines are installed in Metro's bus fleet. This consists of a driver's console
from which single trip and daily off-peak tickets are sold and a ticket validator which is used
by passengers to validate their tickets. Ten trips, ten day and student monthly tickets can be
pre-purchased from Metro ticket sales agents. These tickets must also be validated by the
passenger on each boarding.

 How Does It Work

When you buy a single trip or Day Tripper off-peak ticket on the bus the driver will issue you a
blank ticket which you then insert into the validator. The validator prints details of your purchase
on the ticket and records the sale. If you choose to take advantage of Metro’s range of discounted
Ten trip, Ten day or Student Monthly tickets, purchased from a Metro sales agent, you are issued
with a pre-printed ticket, which must be validated each time you board the bus. The validator will
print details of your trip on the ticket.

 Free Transfers

If you are using a Ten trip ticket and you need to transfer between buses to complete your journey,
the validator will accept your ticket without deducting another trip if you board the second bus within
90 minutes of validating your ticket on the first bus. The validator will accept any number of trips on
Tripper tickets in the off-peak times or at any time for Senior’s All-Day tickets.

 Validate Your Ticket

All tickets including those purchased from Metro sales agents must be validated as you board the bus.
Put your ticket into the validator - follow the arrows on the ticket to make sure it’s the right way up
and inserted in the right direction. The validator will return your ticket with the travel details printed
on it and from this you can see how many trips you have left on a Metro Ten or how many days are
left on a Ten Day ticket. If you have a problem just check with the driver. Remember if you are
travelling on a concession ticket you are required to carry your concession permit and to show it to
the driver on request.

 Looking after your Ticket

Details of the ticket you purchased and the number of trips taken are encoded on the magnetic strip
on the back of the ticket. To keep your ticket safe from damage ask for a ticket wallet from a Metro
Sales Agent when you buy your ticket.

 What Ticket Should I Buy

Single Trip Tickets

If you prefer to pay for each single trip as you board, the system enables the driver to issue
you with a paper ticket printed with details of the fare you have purchased.

Metro 10 Trip Tickets

If you wish to reduce your travel costs and prefer to be able to travel at any time, then try a Metro 10.

Ten trip tickets are available for all fare categories. Prices for adults increase with the distance travelled.
Students pay one price for travel over an unlimited distance.
These tickets are sold by Metro ticket sales agents.

Day-Tripper Off Peak Tickets

Available for all fare categories and one price gives travel over any distance for any number of trips on the day
of purchase.

These tickets cannot be used in the peak periods. One day tickets are purchased from the driver but there are
also ten day versions of this ticket sold by ticket sales agents and these can be used on any day you choose -
keep one handy in your wallet.

Family Tripper

An off-peak day tripper ticket is also available for families. Two adults with three children or one adult with
four children constitute a family for the purposes of this ticket. These tickets are purchased from the driver after 9.00am Monday to Friday, and any time
Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays.

Seniors All Day Tickets

A senior's ticket is available to any person who has been issued with a senior's card by the Department of
Community and Health Services. This ticket provides travel at any time over any distance for any number
of trips on the day of purchase. One day tickets are purchased from the driver, but there is also a ten day
version sold by ticket agents and this can be used on any day you choose - keep one handy!

 Using the Wayfarer Ticketing System

Electronic ticket machines are installed in Metro's Burnie bus fleet. This consists of a driver's console
from which single trip tickets are sold and a ticket validator which is used by passengers who have
purchased multi-ride tickets either from the driver or from a Metro ticket sales agent.

 How does it Work?

You can buy a single trip ticket on the bus and the driver will issue you with a paper ticket printed with
your purchase details just as before. However if you choose to take advantage of Metro's range of
discounted fares such as Day Tripper off-peak tickets sold by all drivers or the Ten Trip or Ten Day tickets
purchased from a ticket agent, you are issued with a credit card size ticket which is validated by you each
time you board a bus.

 Validating your Ticket

All multi-ride tickets including Ten Trip and Ten Day tickets must be validated as you board the bus.
Put your ticket into the validator with the Metro logo facing up - it does not matter which end.
The validator will return your ticket with the travel details printed on it and the display on the validator
will also show you the ticket details including how many trips you have left on a Metro 10 or how many
days are left on a 10 day ticket. If you have a problem just check with the driver. Remember - if you
are travelling on a concession ticket you are required to carry your concession permit and show it to
the driver on request.

 Looking after your Ticket

Details of the ticket you purchased and the number of trips taken are encoded on the magnetic strip
on the back of the ticket. To keep your ticket safe from damage ask for a ticket wallet when you buy
your ticket from a Metro ticket agent.

 Free Transfers

If you are using a Ten Trip ticket and you need to transfer between buses to complete your journey,
the validator will accept your ticket without deducting another trip as long as you board the second bus
within 60 minutes of validating your ticket on the first bus. The validator will accept any number of trips
on day tripper tickets in the off-peak times.
