Metro Tasmania Pty Ltd is a state owned company established in February 1998. The company trades as Metro and operates bus services in Hobart, Launceston and Burnie. Metro is the largest passenger transport company in Tasmania.


Student Concession Travel Cards

Free student bus passes

Full-time students up to and including the school year in which they turn 18, may be eligible for either a Free Student Pass or a Free Student Transfer Pass if they attend:

  • A recognised infant, primary, secondary or senior secondary school
  • University of Tasmania
  • Australian Maritime College
  • Australian Technical College
  • Tasmanian Academy
  • Tasmanian Polytechnic
  • Tasmanian Skills Institute

Non-urban students

Full-time students up to and including the year in which they turn 18, and who are living in non-urban areas as defined by the Department of Infrastructure, Energy and Resources (DIER), may be eligible for a 90-cent student fare when travelling into an urban area from a non-urban area. Metro is phasing out the Urban Fringe Student Permit and now encourages all students to apply for a Metro Greencard, to be eligible for a Student Metro Greencard applicants need to attend one of the following:

  • A recognised infant, primary, secondary or senior secondary school
  • University of Tasmania
  • Australian Maritime College
  • Australian Technical College
  • Tasmanian Academy
  • Tasmanian Polytechnic
  • Tasmanian Skills Institute
