Metro Tasmania Pty Ltd is a state owned company established in February 1998. The company trades as Metro and operates bus services in Hobart, Launceston and Burnie. Metro is the largest passenger transport company in Tasmania.

Free Student Bus Passes
Full-time students may be eligible for either a Free Student Pass or a Free Student Transfer Pass up to and including the school year in which they turn 18 and attend a recognised:
- infant, primary, secondary or senior secondary school;
- University of Tasmania;
- Australian Maritime College;
- Australian Technical College; or
- TAFE Tasmania.

Urban Fringe Students
Full-time students up to and including the year in which they turn 18, and who are living in urban fringe areas as defined by the Department of Infrastructure, Energy and Resources (DIER), may be eligible to purchase a 60 cent student fare when travelling into an urban area from urban fringe areas. Students must present a valid Urban Fringe Student Permit and attend a recognised:
- infant, primary, secondary or senior secondary school;
- University of Tasmania;
- Australian Maritime College;
- Australian Technical College; or
- TAFE Tasmania.
