The Department of Infrastructure, Energy & Resources (DIER) has recently recommended a number of changes to student fares to address inconsistencies and improve the equity of fares across Tasmania.
The residencial address of a student in either urban or urban fringe areas will now determine the fares payable for travel on public transport services. Details of the review of student bus fares, including information on the defined urban areas, can be obtained by phoning DIER on 1300 135 513 or viewing DIER's website www.dier.tas.gov.au/student_bus_fares.
Who Should Apply?
All students aged 18 or below who reside in urban
fringe areas (ie outside the defined Urban Areas) and
who use Metro services should apply for an Urban
Fringe Student Permit. This will enable access to the 30
cent per trip student fare, for travel to and from urban
areas, which will take effect from 1 July 2008.
The student fare will apply on all buses at all times, not just going to and from school.
For the two-month period from 1 July to 31 August 2008, eligible students will be able to access the 30 cent fares on request from Metro drivers. From 1 September the 30 cent fare can only be accessed by holders of an Urban Fringe Student Permit.
Is there a cost to obtain an Urban Fringe
Student Permit?
No, initial permits will be issued for free, however a
replacement fee of $11.00 will be charged to replace lost
