Free bus travel across Tasmania

Tasmanians can now hop on Metro buses for free, with no fares required on services across the State.

This Tasmanian Government cost‑of‑living initiative is designed to help ease pressure on household budgets, particularly as fuel prices continue to rise. As more Tasmanians look for easier and more affordable ways to get around, Metro is here to help keep people moving, to work, to the shops, to appointments, and everywhere in between.

Free travel applies to all bus services statewide, including:

  • adult, concession, urban, non-urban, and child/student fares
  • all government-contracted school bus services that charge a fare

This initiative makes it simpler and more affordable to build public transport into everyday routines, whether you catch the bus regularly or are considering it for the first time.

What customers need to know

  • No fare is required while free travel is in place
  • Customers should not tap their GreenCard when boarding
  • Simply hop on, take a seat and enjoy the ride

Customers are encouraged to allow extra travel time, particularly during peak periods. Our teams are working hard to support increased demand and keep services running smoothly.

Metro welcomes customers who may be choosing to travel by bus for the first time. Our drivers and support teams are here to help make each journey feel straightforward, practical and welcoming.
