GreenCard is a physical smartcard that allows you to pay for travel on services with Metro Tasmania, Derwent Ferries, and Tassielink. It makes travelling easier, faster and cheaper.
Please note: GreenCard payments can only be made using a physical GreenCard. At this stage, digital payments are not supported through the GreenCard system.
See our FAQs below to get started.
To get a GreenCard, you can:
- Order online: Visit our GreenCard application page and fill out the application form to request a physical GreenCard.
- In person: Visit a Metro Shop, Metro Tasmania Depot Office, or an approved Metro GreenCard Agent.
Please note: If you apply online, you should receive your physical GreenCard within 5-10 business days at your nominated address. Cards issued in person are typically provided on the spot.
All GreenCards cost $5 (non-refundable).
A GreenCard is a physical smart card that you can use to pay for travel. Here’s how it works:
- Load credit onto your GreenCard either online, on the bus (cash), or in-person at a Metro Shop, Depot Office, or GreenCard Agent.
- Tap your GreenCard on the card reader when boarding a Metro bus, a Derwent Ferry, or a Tassielink service. You do not have to tap off. Your fare will be automatically deducted based on the default trip and any concession discounts applied, as nominated on sign-up. Customers are required to update Metro should their default zone change.
- When your travel credit is getting low, simply top it up with additional credit to continue travel.
Please note: Online credit is processed at 12am (midnight) each day, however, this may take up to 24 hours. Please ensure that you top up before your balance is too low to cover your next trip.
Customers can choose whether to register their GreenCard online. By doing so, you unlock additional benefits that you can access in the My GreenCard online portal or the Metro App such as:
- Manage settings: Update your personal details, set a default trip, and manage your balance all in one place.
- Top up your GreenCard: Top-up when your credit is low.
- Transaction history: View a detailed record of your recent trips and fare deductions.
Online: Those with registered GreenCards can check their credit balance and top-up on the go by logging into their GreenCard account online or Metro Tas App.
In-person: When tapping on with your GreenCard, both the cost of your journey and your remaining travel credit balance will be displayed on the payment screen.
There are also indicator lights featured on the left-hand side of the customer screen that will alert you to the remaining travel credit balance on your card. The light will flash green if the balance is more than $7, orange if the balance is less than $7, and red if there is no credit remaining on the card.
You can top up your GreenCard credit:
- On board the bus (cash only).
- At a GreenCard Agent, or at a Metro Depot Office or Metro Shop. A list of locations can be found here.
- Through the My GreenCard online portal – for registered GreenCards only (may take up to 24hrs).
- With the Metro Tas App – for registered GreenCards only (may take up to 24hrs).
If your trip takes your travel credit balance into debit, you should recharge your GreenCard as soon as possible in order to continue use. Any amount owing on your balance will be automatically deducted at the time of your credit recharge.
Automatic top-up:
Once logged into the My GreenCard online portal, you can set up automatic top-ups for when your credit falls below a specified amount. You can set your own values of ‘minimum balance’ and ‘top-up amount’.
When the balance on your GreenCard falls below the ‘minimum balance’, it will be automatically topped up with the nominated ‘top-up amount’.
Please choose a ‘minimum balance’ value that is enough to cover your travel in periods where a top-up maybe delayed* to ensure you will always have sufficient credit on your GreenCard.
*Online credit is processed at 12am (midnight) each day; however may take more than 24 hours, so please ensure you top up before your balance is too low to cover your daily fare.
When you register for an Adult GreenCard you will be asked to nominate your ‘default trip’, which is the correct fare type for the journey that you usually travel. The default trip fare will be deducted each time you tap your GreenCard upon boarding.
If you want to travel a journey that is not your default trip, simply notify the driver as you board before tapping your GreenCard to allow them to deduct the correct fare from your balance.
Concession and Student GreenCards do not need a default trip when used solely within the urban area. If your default trip includes non-urban areas, you can nominate an alternative default trip when signing up. This will allow the appropriate fare to be deducted each time the GreenCard is tapped at the start of a journey.
For more information about fares, including urban and non-urban zones, please visit the Tasmanian Government Transport Fare Finder website.
The daily cap refers to the maximum amount you will be charged for travel in a day. There are different caps for adult and concession fares. If your first trip is after 9am on weekdays, or you are travelling on a weekend or public holiday, the lower standard daily cap will apply. If your first trip is before 9am on a weekday, the peak daily cap will apply.
The following applies to urban travel:
Child/Student
The child/student concession daily cap is $2.00 regardless of the time and day of boarding.
Concession
Weekday adult concession daily cap is $2.90 if the first boarding is prior to 9am, or $1.50 if the first boarding is after 9am. Saturday, Sunday and Public Holiday adult concession daily cap is $1.50.
Adult
Weekday full fare daily cap is $4.80 if the first boarding is prior to 9am, or $2.40 if the first boarding is after 9am. Saturday, Sunday and Public Holiday full fare daily cap is $2.40.
You can transfer between services for free within 90 minutes of your first boarding, if travelling within the same zone(s) paid for when first boarding.
Please use the Fare Finder to calculate your fare and check zone maps.
Free 90-minute transfers are included on and between: Metro Tasmania buses, Derwent Ferries, and Tassielink buses.
Concession and student urban fares are charged at a flat rate regardless of zones travelled.
A Student or Concession GreenCard is not transferable and may only be used by the registered cardholder.
An Adult GreenCard may be used by other travellers.
You can report your card as lost or stolen:
