There is no single type of person who becomes a Metro bus operator.

Our drivers have different backgrounds, different stories and different reasons for joining Metro. Some came looking for greater job security. Others wanted a new challenge, more independence or work that kept them connected to their community.

For many, bus driving was a career they had never previously considered.

Hear from some of the women already behind the wheel at Metro about what brought them here, what surprised them about the job and what they would say to other women considering making the move.

You might already have more of the skills than you think

Being a great bus operator is about much more than driving.

Every day, our operators work with people, make decisions, manage changing situations and help thousands of Tasmanians get where they need to go.

Skills like communication, patience, resilience, care and sound judgement are valuable at Metro, wherever you developed them.

You don’t need previous bus-driving experience. Metro provides six weeks of paid training, including practical driver training and support to gain the licence required to drive for Metro.

You’ll learn step by step, with experienced people around you to help build your skills and confidence before you head out on the road.

What is the job really like?

Bus driving is a practical, independent and people-focused career.

You’ll meet people from every part of the community and help them get to work, school, appointments, family and the places that matter to them.

No two days are quite the same. You’ll be trusted to work independently, make decisions on the road and provide a safe and reliable service for your passengers.

It is also shift-based work. Depending on your roster, this can include early starts, evenings, weekends and public holidays. We want people joining Metro to understand the job they are applying for, so we’ll explain roster arrangements and what you can expect throughout the recruitment process.

Supported from training to the road

Starting a new career can feel like a big move, particularly if you have never imagined yourself driving a heavy vehicle.

That is why training and support are an important part of the pathway into Metro.

Your first six weeks include paid, practical training designed to build your skills progressively. You’ll learn about the vehicle, safe driving, working with customers and the Metro network before transitioning into independent driving.

You’ll also become part of a wider team of drivers, trainers, operational employees and support people who understand what it takes to get started.

Safety at Metro

We know safety can be an important consideration for women thinking about a career in bus driving.

Metro continues to invest in the safety of our people through measures including CCTV, driver security systems and operational support. Safety, incident response and the support available to you are also covered as part of your training.

Creating a safe and respectful workplace is an important part of attracting and retaining more women at Metro.

As a Metro bus operator, you receive:

• A competitive salary of between $70,900 – $94,000 per year (plus Super) for full-time drivers, well above the national award
• $2,000 Sign-on Bonus made up of $1,000 sign-on bonus once you pass probation and $1,000 once you hit 12 months at Metro. See Terms & Conditions.
